Nowadays, thatch roofing is a very popular choice for home owners, renovators or businesses, who want to turn their outdoor area into a tropical retreat. When it comes to building roofs or choosing an outdoor gazebo, we usually only think of roof structures like brick, steel, iron or sail cloths (for outside areas). However, thatch roofing can be used to not only cover an outdoor gazebo, but sheds, houses or cottages. Aesthetically, thatch roofing adds a huge landscaping dimension to any outdoor area, along with having plenty of environmental and economical benefits. In particular, Bali Huts are an attractive and environmentally friendly roof, harvested from a renewable resource, and made with alang-alang grass.
But what about the timber? What is the best timber for Bali Huts and is it better to get timber from Bali? We will often get asked questions like these and based on our professional experience and customer feedback, we believe that the best timber is sourced from Australian grown plantations. The timber we use for our roof frame is kiln-dried arsenic-free treated pine (termite resistant, along with being pet and child friendly).
The problem with sourcing timber from Bali is that they are usually made with coconut posts and designed purely for cosmetic purposes. The coconut posts are hollow and rot easily – and as you can imagine, the termites absolutely love them. Coconut timber also is prone to split in dry, humid climates so it is best to buy timber made from Australian plantations because it tends to be not only weather resistant, but incredibly durable. The good news is that Australian made Bali Huts have a lifespan of approximately 10-15 years with no maintenance, mildew or cleaning. Its natural insulation qualities reduce heat by up to 10° in summer, and offers warmth on cooler days.
